In one of the most common news stories of 2020, Universal Studios has recently announced that their female-led film, The 355, starring Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz, and Lupita Nyong’o has been delayed from January 15, 2021 to January 14, 2022. The delay comes following host of COVID-19 spikes and theater reclosures in the United States as well as many other countries.
The film harkens back to early 2000’s action movies, but with a flavor of the modern day superhero movie. The ensemble comes together from different sides of the world to fight a common, as the trailer puts it, invisible threat that will bring about a third World War.
This will be producer and screenwriter turned director Simon Kinberg’s sophomore outing behind the camera. He co-wrote the script with television scribe Theresa Rebeck. Kinberg’s first directorial outing was X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which received mixed to bad reviews mostly criticizing the film for its bland plot and palate. This film looks like it could be a lot of fun with an exciting cast.
In addition to the actors mentioned prior, Diane Kruger, Bingbing Fan, Sebastian Stan, and Edgar Ramírez also star in the film. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed theater going for 2020 and now with cases not slowing down, it is clear that studios are pushing their movies even farther back in hopes that they can be one of the first new releases once everything returns to some normalcy.
The 355 is just one of many late 2020 and early 2021 films to be pushed back.
