Netflix released the first trailer for Ava DuVernay’s prison documentary The 13th.
Set to open the New York Film Festival this Friday, The 13th investigates the prison industry as a whole and mass incarceration in the United States. It examines how the United States has come to have the highest rate of incarceration in the world and the majority of those imprisoned being African American.
The eye-opening documentary is entitled The 13th referring to The Thirteenth Amendment: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States….”
While The 13th’s subject matter is highly sensitive and hard to hear, the documentary features informative storytelling outlining the fear and trends of mass criminalization, citing specific moments in history such as; Birth of a Nation (1915), the rebirth of the KKK, the Civil Rights Movement, the 1994 Crime Bill, the rise of ALEC, and the Black Lives Matter movement.
The 13th will debut on Netflix and open in a limited theatrical release October 7th.
