Thailand has announced How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, directed by Pat Boonnitipat, as its official submission for the 2025 Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category. The National Federation of Thai Film Associations made the announcement on Friday, showcasing Thailand’s ambition in the global film industry.
The film, co-written by Boonnitipat and Thodsapon “Ped” Thiptinnakorn, has been a major success both locally and internationally. Produced by the popular Bangkok-based studio GDH, it has resonated deeply with audiences in Thailand, where it has become the highest-grossing film of the year.
The story follows a young man, portrayed by pop singer-turned-actor Putthipong Assaratanakul, known as Billkin, who leaves his job to care for his ailing grandmother, driven by hopes of inheriting her wealth. Despite its premise, the movie strikes a balance between humor and warmth, making it a hit among different generations.
How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies has accumulated $34 million in box office earnings across Southeast Asia and Australia/New Zealand, making it the top-grossing Thai film in countries including Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. Its recent release in the United States and China has brought it closer to the $50 million mark globally, making it a standout in the international film scene.
According to GDH, the film has drawn a diverse audience in Thailand, with people in their 20s to 50s often bringing elderly family members along.
“It has brought people of all generations to theaters, an increasingly rare sight in today’s digital age,” GDH noted in its statement.
Thailand has submitted films for the Best International Feature Film category since 1994, although a nomination has remained elusive. The shortlist for the 97th Academy Awards in this category is set to be announced on December 17, with nominations following on January 17. The winners will be unveiled on March 2, 2025.
