With Warcraft making a small splash at the box office, and Assassin’s Creed coming out later this year, people are wondering what kind of future movies based off of video games will have. Time will tell, but for now people are trying their best, like Lawrence Kasanoff who is in the process of producing a Tetris movie series.
According to Kasanoff, he wants to make a story so big and complex that one movie can’t hold it all in. Kasanoff said in an interview with Empire that he came up with the story when “thinking about Tetris and the theme of creating order out of chaos.” So it can be inferred that the Tetris movies will not be goofy, but instead will try to create an epic story based off of the Russian puzzle game.
Lawrence Kasanoff has had a history in video game adaptations as a producer for Mortal Kombat (1995), which gives him credibility in this project, but can also be discredited for producing Foodfight; one of the only movies to ever receive a Rotten Tomatoes of zero.
There’s very little to judge this project by yet, except for the concept. So far we’re all just amazed that this unbelievable movie idea is coming to life, and even more amazed in the fact that it will become a trilogy. Will Tetris rise to the occasion, or are we just in store for another campy video game adaptation, nobody can say at this point but we’re excited for the answer.
