Terrifier 3 hits a new milestone at the box office last weekend, officially earning over $50 million domestically in theaters. The film has cemented itself not only as a top horror movie for the year but also as one of the biggest recent independent blockbusters. Overall, it ranks as the fifth highest-grossing horror film in 2024.
Cineverse, which released Terrifier 3, relied on targeted marketing to promote the film among its horror fan base. The movie’s success has been remarkable, given its lack of major studio backing. Other films in the top five—A Quiet Place: Day One ($138 million), Alien: Romulus ($105 million), Longlegs ($74 million) and Smile 2 ($52 million)—were all produced by major studios, except Longlegs, produced by the independent company Neon.
Terrifier 3 debuted with momentum, earning $19 million domestically in its opening weekend. With no signs of slowing down, projections indicate the film could earn over $60 million domestically by the end of its theater run.
As a small independent film, these numbers are significant. Produced on a budget of roughly $2 million, Terrifier 3 has achieved a domestic return of 2,500%.
