Tension and The Elite Take Center Stage In ‘Downton Abbey’ Film Trailer

Dinner parties, ballroom dances, and high society abound in the new trailer for the film Downton Abbey. The film, directed by Michael Engler, comes after the six-season television show that began in 2010.

The Crawley family receives word that Queen Mary and King George V will be visiting their Yorkshire Country estate of Downton Abbey. The trailer details the many preparations the family makes in order to be ready for the momentous visit. Romance and arguments proliferate throughout the trailer; strain builds up between Lady Bagshaw (Imelda Staunton), the family’s guest, and Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham (Maggie Smith). A relationship begins between Bagshaw’s maid Lucy (Tuppence Middleton) and Branson (Allen Leech). Much of the show’s original cast, such as Hugh Bonneville and Laura Carmichael, will return for the film.

Julian Fellowes penned the script and production began mid-2018. Engel assumed the role of director after Brian Percival stepped down from the position in August of 2018. Filming locations for the project include Highclere Castle in Hampshire England, which was the main filming location for the television series, and Lacock, Wiltshire. Shooting was completed in November 2018.

The film will be released on September 20th in the US after the UK release a week before. Watch the trailer below.
