Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has been a hit at the box office. Tuesday, August 1st, the film made $3.85 million and is projected to make $30 million in the first five days. The film is projected to make a $40 million opening.
The film’s preview number is lower than the 2014 live-action reboot, which made $4.6 million on Thursday night showings. However, it made more than the 2016 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which made $2 million. Mutant Mayhem has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 95%, which puts it on par with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
The film is opening as the hit Barbie still takes the #1 spot at the box office for its third consecutive week as number 1. Barbie has made $55 million- $60 million in its third week. Disney’s Haunted Mansion has only made $24 million, putting it below the rest. Mutant Mayhem is also up against Jason Statham’s Meg 2: The Trench, which opens Friday and is projected to make over $20 million.
The producer and co-writer of the film are Seth Rogen, directed by Jeff Rowe. The official logline for the film states, “After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate. Still, they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.”
The film stars Nicolas Cantu (Leo), Brady Noon (Ralph), Micah Abbey (Donny), Sharon Brown Jr. (Mikey), Jackie Chan (Master Splinter), Ayo Edebiri (April O’Neil), Maya Rudolph (Cynthia Utom), and Giancarlo Esposito (Baxter Stockman).
The villain mutants are voiced by Ice Cube (SuperFly), Rogen (Bebop), John Cena (Rocksteady), Hannibal Buress (Genghis Frog), Rose Byrne (Leatherhead), Natasha Demetriou (Wingnut), Post Malone (Ray Fillet), and Paul Rudd (Mondo Gecko).
