‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’ Crew Addresses Inspiration Behind References

The half-shell heroes are ready for their Hollywood close-up yet again. Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael are back in a new animated adventure, produced by Seth Rogen, called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Across the film’s hour and 39 minute runtime, it’s filled to the brim with cleverly placed references, be it to Turtle culture or teenage culture. In this new iteration, the Turtles act like teenagers more than ever seen before, and they act especially like modern teenagers.

Some of the influence is seen with Donatello, the brains of the group. At multiple points in the film, Donnie makes several references to popular anime, such as Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and Attack On Titan, to name few. As ComicBook reports, one specific scene had the Turtles wearing human clothes to blend into their surroundings, and Donatello is wearing a Jojo’s hoodie.

Responding to a tweet from an eagle-eyed fan, Andrew Joustra, the script/recording coordinator for Mutant Mayhem, said that director Jeff Rowe asked the boys playing the Turtles to list some of their favorite anime. Micah Abbey, who plays Donatello, said that one of his favorites was Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and that carried over into the script.

Check out the tweet from Andrew Joustra below. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is now playing in theaters.
