While comedy duo Key and Peele continue to advance in their cinematic careers, some have wondered if they’ll ever return to their first big-screen adventure. They first made the jump from television to the big screen with 2016’s Keanu.
Directed by Peter Atencio, Keanu follows two friends, played by Key and Peele, attempting to rescue their cat, named after Keanu Reeves, from gangsters who kidnapped him. The film was a moderate success critically, but it wasn’t a success financially, as ComicBook.com reports. The budget remained around $15 million, but the film only brought in $20.5 million globally.
While Keanu has gained a cult following over the years, Warner Bros hasn’t made any move to get a potential sequel off the ground. “There has not been any discussion. Those guys are amazing, and I still talk to them, but I think we all found our own separate paths,” director Atencio tells ComicBook.com. “This may shock you, but Keanu is not the most financially successful of the mid-2010s, so there’s not a ton of clamor for another one.”
“Keanu 2 — that one’s not in the works,” Peele admitted just last year. “No comment, how about that? An official no comment!”
Peter Atencio’s newest project, the second season of The Afterparty, is available to stream on Apple TV+, and Keanu is available to rent or own.
