The upcoming London Film Festival has landed its closing performance. From Daniel Kaluuya and Kibwe Tavares, in their feature debut as co-directors, The Kitchen will close out the annual Festival, according to Hollywood Reporter.
The Kitchen is set in a dystopian London, with a massive gap between the rich and the poor. Social housing is an old notion, and all that’s left is a group called The Kitchen, who refuse to bid their homes farewell. The core of the story sees Izi and 12-year-old Benji, with Izi trying to find a way out of her situation and Benji looking for a group he can call a family. It stars Kane Robinson, Jedaiah Bannerman, Hope Ikpoku Jr., and Teija Kabs.
“We both grew up in London, and The Kitchen is a love letter to our city, so it’s a true honor to premiere it here, in our hometown, on the closing night of BFI’s London Film Festival,” co-directors Tavares and Kaluuya said.
“Starting a decade ago as a workshop in a local Barbershop, the film’s journey from script to screen has been a continued collaboration between us, and the community of cast and crew that came to make up our “Kitchen,” including our two amazing leads Kane Robinson and Jedaiah Bannerman whose performances anchor the heart of our story. Together we have aimed to make something fresh, thoughtful and cinematic — an allegory and homage to the residents of ‘The Kitchen’ in every city in the world.”
The Kitchen will close out the London Film Festival on October 15th, and will be available to watch on Netflix.
