Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour’ Concert Film Rakes In Record-Breaking $39 Million On Opening Day

Taylor Swift’s concert film The Eras Tour broke box office records on its opening day at about $39 million. Including the $2.9 million earned on Thursday, Swift’s film is now the second-highest box office opening in October, just behind 2019’s Joker.

The film was set to be released on Friday the 13th due to the number being essential for Taylor Swift lore. However, the release was pushed to Saturday for currently unclear reasons. This change didn’t affect these earnings too much, especially with Swift’s surprise announcement on Wednesday regarding previews on Thursday. The film earned about $2.9 million via those previews alone.

With this impressive boost in numbers, many have been predicting the film’s future high earnings. Some people have offered $125 million three-day predictions, while others have offered a more conservative $100 million. Even so, the film has succeeded financially thanks to its unconventional marketing and distribution.

The Eras Tour is set for a limited release, taking the film out on Monday and rereleasing it on Thursday with more showtimes. In addition to this created scarcity, Swift and AMC Theatres, the film’s distributors, have been encouraging fans attending the show to use their cell phones and dance during the concert, just like a real concert.

Through this success, Eras Tour has not only been a success for Swift but also for AMC. The concert film is one of the first movies to have a direct deal with a theater chain, offering plenty of money for distributors and exclusivity for the concert. With this unique marketing technique, many studios have been inspired to attempt a similar deal. Beyoncé has partnered with AMC for an exclusive December release of her Renaissance World Tour film.

Through this Taylor Swift mania, many theaters are experiencing a resurgence in earnings after a long drought of middling films released after the Barbenheimer craze.
