The Shining was a 1980 horror movie directed by the late Stanley Kubrick and based on the Stephen King book of the same name. While met with negative criticism when it first came out, including King himself, it’s Kubrick’s now considered a horror classic. Now, almost 40 years later a sequel to that movie will be released.
Doctor Sleep is the title of this new sequel, which follows Danny Torrence from The Shining as an adult played by Ewan McGregor. Danny encounters a young girl named Abra (Kyliegh Curran) with psychic powers similar to Danny’s ‘shining’ ability’ Abra is being pursued by an organization called The Knot, whose members capture people with the ‘shining’ so they can use their powers to fulfill their desires. Mike Flanagan will be directing Doctor Sleep, which will be release this November.
For those unfamiliar with The Shining’s plot, it’s about a family of three who move to the mysterious Overlook Hotel, where the family patriarch Jack Torrence (Jack Nicholson), gets a job as the off-season caretaker. However, not long after the family move in, strange things start to happen. Notably Jack’s mental health begins deteriorating due to supernatural forces, causing him to violently attack his family. Jack’s young son Danny, originally played by Danny Lloyd, possesses psychic abilities referred to as the ‘shining,’ which allow him to perceive the supernaturals forces within the Overlook Hotel.
