Following its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival over the weekend, Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero has launched to near-unanimous critical praise, securing a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes across 23 early reviews. The critical reception places Toho’s direct sequel within striking distance of its 2023 predecessor, Godzilla Minus One, which held a 99% critical consensus and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
Written and directed once again by Yamazaki, Minus Zero picks up two years after the devastating events of the first installment. As post-war Japan endures a grueling recovery effort to restore daily civil life, an escalated threat emerges that shatters the fragile peace, thrusting the surviving characters into a final conflict for survival. The original principal cast reunites for the follow-up, led by Ryunosuke Kamiki as Kōichi Shikishima and Minami Hamabe as Noriko Ōishi. The ensemble also sees the return of Yuki Yamada as Shirō Mizushima, Munetaka Aoki as Sōsaku Tachibana, Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda, Sakura Ando as Sumiko Ōta, and Kuranosuke Sasaki as Yōji Akitsu.
Early festival reactions have positioned the sci-fi epic as a potential awards contender once again, adding momentum to a crowded fall festival landscape that includes festival favorites like Penélope Cruz’s La Bola Negra, Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine, and Simon Stone’s biographical drama Elsinore.
Toho is set to release Godzilla Minus Zero in North American theaters and IMAX on November 6, 2026.
