After Godzilla: Minus One released to nothing short of monstrous success, a sequel has been announced from Toho. As production on the film moves closer, more details surrounding the nature of the film have emerged. Takashi Yamazaki brought Godzilla: Minus One to audiences six years after the last Japanese Godzilla film. Serving as writer and director, alongside involving himself in multiple other facets of production, the film told the story of a Kamikaze pilot who survived World War II. But when a huge monster known as Godzilla appears out of the sea, he’s forced to face the demons of his past if the innocents of Japan are to survive.
Confirmed to be attached to the follow-up film, Yamazaki alluded to some production tidbits at the Visual Effects Society Awards. Specifically, he confirmed that the story is now in it’s very early stages.
Screenrant noted, as well, that Yamazaki was able to confirm that the Minus One follow up will have a higher budget than the first, which reportedly already has a small budget.
In their initial report on the subject, Variety reported that Yamazaki also took a firm stance on the problematic topic of AI. He noted its use as a tool, but stated that he won’t be quick to use it as such, mentioning how he likes to stick to older methods of filmmaking that aren’t common practice anymore.
