Taika Waititi Working On New Project ‘Next Goal Wins’

 

While Taika Waititi is becoming a mainstay director in Marvel Cinematic Universe, he is quickly gaining attention outside of Disney as Fox Searchlight announced that they will be distributing a new project entitled Next Goal Wins.

According to Deadline, Next Goal Wins is based on a 2014 British soccer documentary by directors Mike Brett and Steve Jamison.

The documentary follows a Dutch coach Thomas Rongen who attempts a vigorous task of transforming a American Samoa soccer squad from a year round loser to a perennial winner. The film made its international premiere at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival and won an British Independent Film Award for Best Documentary.

Waititi previously confirmed in a report that a mysterious project was brewing with Searchlight, with plot details under wraps. Imaginarium was involved with the production of the film with shooting to begin in the fall. Searchlight is issuing the helmer’s awards season contender Jojo Rabbit with a October 18 release date. The film will be premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival next month and will experience a release at the Fantastic Fest.

Waititi begins production on a sequel to Marvel’s God of Thunder as Thor: Love and Thunder in 2020. Waititi has already has completed the script.
