Sydney Sweeney’s new boxing movie, Christy, has been picked up by a distributor and is set to receive an awards-friendly release date, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

A biopic about WBC female super welterweight champ Christy Martin, the film is co-written by Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner David Michôd and Mirrah Foulkes, from a story by Katherine Fugate, with Michôd directing. Christy also stars Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, and Katy O’Brian.

Producers for the sports drama include Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, Black Bear’s Teddy Schwarzman, Votiv’s Brent Stiefel and Justin Lothrop, Michôd, and Sweeney, with Black Bear’s Michael Heimler, John Friedberg, Andrew Golov, and Clementine Quittner, Anonymous Content’s David Levine and Nick Shumaker, as well as Mirrah Foulkes, Harrison Huffman, Brad Zimmerman, and Ryan Schwartz serving as Executive Producers.

Black Bear Pictures, which financed the project, also plans to release the film itself as part of their new distribution label. Sweeney previously worked with the company on the 2024 horror film, Immaculate.

Now, Black Bear has set a release date of November 7, 2025, for Christy in the middle of awards season, planning to mount a campaign for the movie and Sweeney, whose performance is being praised.

Black Bear’s President of U.S. Distribution Benjamin Kramer spoke about the film’s upcoming release, saying,

We’re thrilled about the upcoming release of ‘Christy,’ a moving portrait of resilience and defiance…Led by Sydney Sweeney’s masterful transformation into the iconic Christy, capturing a young woman’s fierce determination to define her own destiny, the film is elevated by Michôd’s elegant direction and enriched by an electric supporting turn from Ben Foster…‘Christy’ is a celebration of persistence, humor, and humanity in the face of unexpected turns. We cannot wait to share it with audiences across the country.

Christy recently had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
