It’s a good day to be a Superman fan, and an even better day if you’re James Gunn, whose mantra of “Its not super hero fatigue its mediocre movie fatigue” has once again held true. Superman sticks the superhero landing with a stellar $122 million for its opening weekend including the early previews for a super franchise best beating previous holder Zack Synder’s 2013 Man of Steel at $116.7 million.
While $122 million is the domestic haul, Gunn’s Superman saw an international gross of $95 million, which was expected as Superman films have repeatedly been seen to be not as appealing as other super hero figures. With a phenomenal word of mouth and the fresh breath of Gunn’s spin its shaping up to be the year of the Superman. It should also be noted that Gunn’s Superman is only one of three films to pass the $100 million mark at the box office opening weekend for 2025 with Disney’s Lilo & Stitch and Warner Bro.’s A Minecraft Movie, sandwiching it into second making it 2 to 1 in the race to the top of the tent pole between the studios.
In other good news Jurassic World Rebirth’s mutated dinosaurs mayhem and crimes against nature and science continue to keep its franchise alive with a solid second week haul of $40 million. Another win rounds out the top three with Apple Studios’ F1 The Movie scoring $13 million for its third box office lap.
In fourth came How to Train Your Dragon with $7.8 million in its fifth week still carrying on as the family go to movie while Pixar’s Elio still hangs on to the top five with $3.9 million.
28 Years Later took sixth with $2.72 million eeking past Lilo & Stitch which only brought in $2.7 million. Mission Impossible — Final Reckoning took eighth with $1.45 million in its eighth week while Blumhouse’s flop M3GAN 2.0 only saw $1.35 million in its third week falling fast down the leader board.
In tenth came A24’s Materialists with $720,000 in the indie film selections.
