James Gunn announced on Twitter that Superman: Legacy pre-production has begun. In the 2025 Comic Event, the official unveiling of the new DC Universe directed by Gunn and his DC Studios co-head Peter Safran was announced. An article written in Variety writes about Gunn’s feelings. “I’m honored to be a part of the legacy,” Gunn wrote alongside a photo of the Superman: Legacy script cover page. “And what better day than Superman Anniversary Day to dive fully into early pre-production on ‘Superman: Legacy’? Costumes, production design, and more now up and running.”
The film was confirmed in January when Gunn and Saffron revealed the first movie and TV titles for the new DC Universe. Supergirl: World of Tomorrow and The Brave and the Bold (Batman and Robin movies) are also developing. Gunn is responsible for writing and directing the Superman movies.
According to Warner Bros.’s initial synopsis, Superman: Legacy tells the story of Clark Kent in Smallville, Kansas, in Superman’s journey to balance the Kryptonian heritage and human upbringing. He embodies truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees service as obsolete.
Gunn’s reboot of Superman on the big screen in Young Man of Steel means that former Superman actor Henry Cavill will no longer be playing superheroes. Cavill debuted in Man of Steel and reprised in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Gunn has not announced casting for Superman: Legacy.
In late March, Gunn confirmed that no actors were in talks to become the new Superman. Gunn took to Twitter to announce the message. He wrote, “Haven’t had a single talk with a single actor about the role. Just making private lists, prepping material for auditions.”
Superman: Legacy is set to open in theaters on July 25, 2025.
