July is already on track to be a big month for box office success, with Jurassic World Rebirth chomping down on a colossal opening. Hot on Jurassic’s claws is James Gunn’s Superman, already eyeing at least $100 million domestically.
Superman finds Clark Kent already established as Superman, but struggling to manage. Having to contend with Lex Luthor, and his numerous plans to bring him down, Superman has to find how to balance his alien heritage and human upbringing if he has any hope of saving Metropolis.
Hollywood Reporter notes that overall tracking for the film has it landing a domestic opening of $130 million. Early predictions had it a tad higher at $135 million, but DC Studios projected it lower than either number, expecting a number closer to $100 million domestically.
By comparison, Man Of Steel opened to $116 million, and would go on to make $670 million worldwide. While that marked the last time Superman headlined a standalone movie, the new Superman also serves as the beginning of a new cinematic universe centered around DC Comics. Looking at DC’s direct competitor, Marvel, the kickoff to their own cinematic universe, Iron Man, debuted with $98 million domestically back in 2008.
Superman flies onto the big screen on July 11th.
