The Man of Tomorrow is back on the screen of today. After a long road of anticipation, Superman has hit the big screen, with audiences and fans eagerly discussing not just the film itself, but the impact Superman as a hero is already seeming to have on the landscape of blockbuster cinema. Directed by James Gunn, Superman follows Clark Kent a few years after he becomes the Man of Steel. Wrapped up in a plot from Lex Luthor, Superman must contend with his unraveling schemes while struggling to reconcile his heritage.
After its first weekend of circulation, Superman has already garnered highly positive reviews. Fans and critics alike have latched onto the new blockbuster, praising both Gunn’s direction and lead actor David Corenswet’s performance as Superman, but the film has people thinking even further than that, especially when it comes down to the end credits scene. The post credit scene has Superman and Mister Terrific looking at a building that was put together after it was split in two by Lex Luthor. Upon observing the patch job, Superman notes that it’s uneven, with Terrific walking off. Superman then tries to apologize, remarking to himself that he shouldn’t have said anything.
Variety notes that this scene, among the style of the rest of the movie, marks a shift in what the norm is for superhero cinema. An end credit scene for a comic book movie will usually tease a future project, à la Iron Man teasing Nick Fury and The Avengers, but the end scene for Superman takes a different, less serious approach, on top of how other DC projects were teased earlier on. Variety would go on to praise the scene and its humorous nature, calling it “so breezy, so uncomplicated, so fun,” while also commenting on how different it feels. Superman is now playing in theaters.
