Supergirl takes to the sky as its box office run begins with $7.8 million in Thursday previews.
The feature, directed by Craig Gillespie, is the second theatrical feature from James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios and follows Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman. While reviews have been mixed, critics have praised Alcock’s performance as Supergirl. The House of the Dragon actress is joined by previous DC alum Jason Momoa, who fulfills a lifelong dream of playing Lobo, Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham. David Corenswet reprises his role as Superman.
Paramount’s Jackass: Best and Last will also open this weekend and has grossed approximately $1.2 million from Thursday previews. This franchise’s fifth installment is expected to make $10 million domestically against a $10 million budget. Review-wise, the last entry in the pain-seeking saga holds the highest Rotten Tomatoes score of the franchise, with a critic rating of 87%. Also in the box office for Paramount is Scary Movie, which hit the $100 million mark domestically on Thursday. That made it the first R-rated comedy to cross that milestone since 2017’s Girls Trip.
Supergirl is now available in theaters everywhere.
