Super Bowl 50 Offers First Tease of ‘Jason Bourne’

Super Bowl 50 revealed that the upcoming fifth installment of the Bourne franchise will be referred to, simply as Jason Bourne. A lot more spiffy than “Untitled Matt Damon/Bourne sequel.” More so, we got our first glimpse of Matt Damon back in action in his signature role.

The fifth outing, including the Jeremy Renner-led The Bourne Legacy (2012), once again features Damon as as title spy. Like previous chapters, Jason Bourne may dig more deeply onto more topical subject matter than, say, the James Bond franchise will likely ever veer into. The latest is said to have been influenced by the recent Edward Snowden controversy, however plot details have yet to be revealed.

Oscar nominated director Paul Greengrass (United 96) returns to the franchise as well (after directing both The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum); he scripts along with Christopher Rouse (who won an Oscar for editing Ultimatum) and Damon himself. The ensemble cast includes returning player Julia Stiles (Silver Linings Playbook), Oscar winner Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln), Vincent Cassel (Black Swan), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler) and current Oscar hopeful Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl).

Jason Bourne opens on July 16th. Check out the teaser trailer below:
