Sundance Film Festival To Continue Despite The LA Fires

As the LA fires rage on, the Sundance Film Festival will continue as planned. The organizers hope that this event will provide a nice break from the stress that many are facing in their day-to-day lives.

“Our community has a history of coming together when passion and perseverance are needed most, drawing strength from the deep bonds that make us so resilient. Right now, we may mourn, but we also know it is important to carry on,” Sundance CEO Amanda Kelso and festival director Eugene Hernandez wrote in a letter to the public.

The fires have caused a lot of destruction. Roughly 60 square miles have been burnt, and more than 12,000 structures have been affected. 92,000 people have been evacuated from the fire’s path, with 24 confirmed deaths. Sundance leadership is not exempt from the damage. Senior Director of Artist Programs, Michelle Satter, lost her home in the Palisades to the fires. She wrote on social media, “Our heart goes out to everyone who’s experiencing loss during this devastating time in our city.”

The festival will be held in Park City, Utah, on January 23. The news of its planned continuation comes amid many event cancellations, such as the Critics Choice Awards and others.
