Divergent, based on a young-adult science-fiction novel by Veronica Roth, will reach theaters on March 21. Summit Entertainment has already scheduled adaptations for the next two books in the series with Insurgent releasing on March 20, 2015 and Allegiant on March 18, 2016. The series will star Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Kate Winslet. Divergent director Neil Burger will net return for part two.
According to Deadline, Robert Schwentke will direct part two instead so that preproduction can begin before Divergent finishes post. Summit seems very enthusiastic to repeat its success with The Twilight Saga, another young-adult series with a female lead and written by a woman. Since the conclusion of The Twilight Saga, The Hunger Games (another Lionsgate – Summit’s parent company – release) has filled that particular niche in the blockbuster movie landscape with a more proactive protagonist, a feature that Divergent appears to share.
Schwentke previously directed the 2010 action film Red for Summit. The script for Insurgent comes from Akiva Goldsman and Brian Duffield. Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher will produce. Insurgent will follow lead characters Tris and Four as the organize a resistance force in a nation that sorts its citizens based on temperament. While Summit has made its intentions clear to adapt the entire trilogy, they have not announced a director for Allegiant or given any sign if Schwentke stepping in for Burger is just temporary.
