Submarine Entertainment recently announced its producing role in the upcoming GameStop documentary directed by Jonah Tulis. On February 5th, the hybrid sales, production and distribution company released a statement claiming its participation in the project (said to already be in the production phase with funding). Twin brothers and co-founders of Submarine, Dan and Josh Braun, are listed as producers for the untitled docu, along with Ben Braun, Matt Burke, director Tulis, Blake J. Harris, and Circle of Confusion’s Julian Rosenberg.
Various GameStop-centered projects are reported to be in the works including a Netflix film rumored to be written by Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker), and book by Ben Mezrich (The Accidental Billionaires) already bought up by MGM. Another documentary is underway for XTR and alleged to be co-directed by Chris Temple and Zach Ingrasci, as the GameStop stock market shakeup continues to make waves.
Tulis’ rendition of this still-quite-ongoing story is focused on taking a more human approach. On his collaboration with Submarine, Tulis says, “This is a true David and Goliath story and our goal is to tell it through the eyes of the incredible men and women who risked it all…making millions in the process and changing the landscape of the stock market forever.” The docu is meant to include interviews with six of the investors who took part in the “financial coup” that occurred only weeks ago. Two investor portraits mentioned in Submarine’s statement release are painted as “a mid-western father of two whose contrarian research helped propel the internet’s big bet against Wall Street” and “an amateur investor whose previous career was rocked by COVID, so she put her life savings online and risked her fate on riding GameStop stock to the moon.” The company is excited to tell the stories of ordinary investors who pooled together to reclaim agency from the Wall Street big dogs.
Submarine is thrilled to join forces with docu director Jonah Tulis and Blake J. Harris. Tulis and Harris have recently come off of their docu Console Wars’ commercial and festival success. Also produced by Julian Rosenberg and Seth Rogen, Console Wars seems to have set the precedent for Tulis and Harris’ retellings of underdog stories. The 2020 documentary remembers the rise of startup gaming company Sega, as it emerged from Nintendo’s shadow and proved itself worthy competitor. Console Wars appeared in CBS All Access and Legendary Television in fall 2020 and earned Official Selection in the SXSW (South by Southwest) Film Festival the same year.
Submarine has led a long and successful career since its 1998 beginning. The company currently fuels successful projects such as The Devil Next Door, Evil Genius, The Keepers, Lenox Hill, Pick of the Litter, and Wild Wild Country, which won the Emmy for Best Documentary Series in 2018. More impressive films in its portfolio include: American Factory, Honeyland, One Child Nation, Echo in the Canyon, Tell Me Who I Am, Watson, The Amazing Johnathan Documentary, Edge of Democracy, and The Kingmaker.
