STX is nearing big deal — a high seven-figure multi-territory pre-buy — for the psychological horror A Head Full of Ghosts. STX plans on distributing in the U.S. and U.K and teaming up with its output partners in Latin America (Sun) Canada (Elevation) and Benelux (The Searchers), like it did on Gunpowder Milkshake a month ago.
Directed by Scott Cooper, the film stars Margaret Qualley, who is notable for her work in 2020 Oscar-nominated Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. A Head Full of Ghosts is based on Paul Tremblay’s 2015 popular horror novel of the same name, with Cooper revising the current draft. The film is told from the the perspective of the girl’s younger sister, who is telling her terrifying story to a horror writer/journalist recalling the time from when she was just 8. The young woman recounts to the journalist how her family was publicly ripped apart 20 years prior by her teenage sister’s mysterious affliction when their 14 year old daughter began showing signs of mental illness.
Additional casting is currently underway on the film. Robert Downey Jr. is executive producing the film. Others producers include Daniel Dubiecki and Lara Alameddine of the Allegiance Theater, Susan Downey of Team Downey, Tyler Thompson of Cross Creek and Cooper and David Gambino.
Cooper’s latest film Antlers was meant to open next month from Searchlight Pictures but had to be pushed back by Disney due to the coronavirus. The new release date is currently unknown.
Qualley has actively been involved in other projects, including her starring role in Berlin opener My Salinger Year, Fosse/Verdon, The Leftovers and biopic Seberg.
