Empty Quarter Studios’ feature documentary Into The Lost Desert follows hardcore desert explorer Max Calderon as he chases after his longtime ambition of crossing the Rub’ al Khali, the world’s last unexplored desert, got sold to STXfilms for international distribution. Deadline confirmed STXfilms acquirement of the documentary.
Emmy Award-winning director Christopher Cassel directed Into The Lost Desert. Cassel is known for his skills in directing documentaries from the small screen to the big screen.
At 50-years-old, Calderan has endured some of the most challenging terrains to ever exist on this earth, pushing his body as far as it can go to survive the most hostile conditions. But there has only been one desert that has eluded him: the Rub’ al Khali, a vast desert in the Arabian peninsula; its 700-mile west-to-east extent had never been crossed in recorded history.
STXfilms Motion Picture Group Chairman Adam Fogelson had this to say about the documentary.
“Into the Lost Desert is about staring down your greatest challenges, no matter how enormous the obstacles, and pursuing your greatest dreams and ambitions, no matter how big or humble,” said Fogelson. “With Kid90, STX recently had good success in the doc space and are privileged to share this new documentary about Max Calderan and his epic trek with audiences. Perhaps Max will do for extreme desert exploring what Alex Honnold did for rock climbing in Free Solo.”
