Ready Player One has been considered one of the most-hyped film releases of the month of March, with its significant amount of Easter eggs and fairly interesting premise, being adapted from one of the most popular science-fiction novels of this decade. The weekend is coming to an end, and the official box office results are in, showing Ready Player One to be at the top of the box office by a wide margin with a $53 million weekend box office in comparison to the second place film Tyler Perry’s Acrimony at $17.1 million, according to Variety. Internationally, the take was even bigger at $181.2 million. Black Panther still ranks highly at the box office in third place, earning a total of $11.26 million domestically this weekend. New release God’s Not Dead: A Light in the Darkness has earned $2.6 million domestically.
Ready Player One focuses on the story of Wade Watts, a young man living in a dystopian world where people spend their days in an online world called OASIS. After the creator of the world sends a message to everyone in the world about a special easter egg that will give control of the world to the discoverer, Wade begins his journey to find it, fighting everyone in the pursuit for control of OASIS.
The film stars a strong cast including main protagonist Tye Sheridan, Simon Pegg, T.J. Miller, Mark Rylance, and wave-making young actress Olivia Cooke, with Ben Mendelsohn playing a big villain. The film was directed by legendary creator Steven Spielberg with a script from Zak Penn and author of the book Ernest Cline. The film is in theaters now and is supposed to be an energy-filled thrill ride from start to finish.
