Although people are still waiting to see Spielberg’s adaptation of West Side Story later this year in December, the director is ready to move on to his next project close to home. Deadline has been informed that Spielberg will be directing a currently untitled film at Amblin Partners which will be inspired by his own childhood growing up in Arizona. Michelle Williams is also allegedly in negotiations to star as his mother, but with a more fictionalized identity.
Spielberg has always given Arizona credit for being an inspiration to many of his story themes and characters. In 2017, HBO released a documentary going into Spielberg’s past, but this film will be the first time he will be giving his perspective on how one of the greatest storytellers was created.
West Side Story has had its release date pushed back due to on-going pandemic, originally set to play in theaters in 2020 but now hoping to be released December 2021. This push back may have disappointed fans, but this gave Spielberg time to play with ideas. This helped him make the decision to finally tell his story on the big screen and start thinking about stars to come on to this project starting with Michelle Williams.
Spielberg’s movie is planned to be released in 2022.
