Steven Spielberg is returning to the silver screen with a new project produced by Universal Studios and Amblin Entertainment in May 2026. Though plot details are currently unknown, the director promises that the film will be an original event film written by longtime screenwriting collaborator David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull).
Despite the secrecy, some people speculate on what the film could be based on his past work and comment regarding the future. Variety reported last month that Spielberg was looking to develop a UFO story written by Koepp. Additionally, Spielberg is well-known and regarded for his other UFO event features like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extraterrestrial. Based on this reasoning, it stands to reason that the final project could be science fiction.
Even so, nothing is confirmed since he has been branching out to other film genres in recent successful projects like his semi-autobiographical drama The Fabelmans, which follows a young boy dreaming of becoming a director. Amblin Entertainment earned seven Oscar nominations from that film alone, from Best Picture to Best Director. Because of this, Spielberg’s project could deviate from the general audience’s expectations.
According to Universal Studios, the film will be released on May 15, 2026. Based on this, Spielberg fans can expect to see more details about the project the following year.
