Steve McQueen’s New World War II Documentary In Development

Steve McQueen has grown increasingly popular with both movie critics and audiences with the release of his last two films, 12 Years A Slave and Widows. Both were extremely well received making back their budget and then some. But Variety just announced that McQueen will be working on a new film, a non-fiction World War Two documentary.

IndieWire reveals that the documentary named The Occupied City, is based upon the illustrated history book “Atlas of an Occupied City. Amsterdam 1940-1945,” which funny enough, was written by his wife Bianca Stigter. The book uncovers traces of the second World War that took place in Amsterdam and leads the reader through the Netherlands capital while it was under occupation.

The Netherlands Film Fund is aiding in the production of the film by providing roughly $920,000 and described the film as “Living in Amsterdam is like living with spirits. It looks like there are two parallel worlds. The past is always present.”

Although the project is still in very early development, McQueen’s previous films were able to discuss difficult real life topics and were able to tackle them head on. Through this he proved his extraordinary talent in being able to tell a compelling story with fully realized characters, creating a very powerful experience for all audiences.

Keidan Chavez: I am an undergraduate attending Whittier College majoring in screen writing and journalism. I love to watch movies, play Red Dead Redemption 2 and read whenever I get the chance. I will watch anything related to Wright, Tarantino, The Coen Brothers or Nolan. I will also play anything made by Naughty Dog or Rockstar Games. I love being able to experience great stories, especially when I am able to share that experience with others. I also love learning about movies and sharing that knowledge to those that are just as passionate.
