Steve Martin Teases Retirement From Acting

After more than 60 years in television and film, Hollywood legend Steve Martin was ready to slow down. But then came Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, Emmy nominations, a new book, a stage show, and an A24 documentary.

Martin was happy with his stage show with longtime friend Martin Short, and had stepped away from his acting career. “We were very happy just doing the live show,” Martin told THR. “There may be a natural end to that — somebody gets sick, somebody just wears out — but I wouldn’t do it without Marty.”

But then Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building came along. The Emmy-nominated series is in its second season and has been renewed for a third. However, despite this resurgence, Martin is sure he is finished after the show.

“When this television show is done, I’m not going to seek others. I’m not going to seek other movies. I don’t want to do cameos. This is, weirdly, it.”

When The Hollywood Reporter pressed him on doing future studio films or collaborations, Martin held his ground that he will soon be finished after the projects he has cooked up have run their course. “To film a movie now, to go someplace else to live, I’m not willing to do that anymore. I can’t disappear for three months,” he said before quipping, “Go into theaters with a comedy movie starring me? It’s got failure written all over it.”

He did relinquish that he does have a hard time sticking to the retirement plan, “My wife keeps saying, ‘You always say you’re going to retire and then you always come up with something,’” he explained. “I’m really not interested in retiring. I’m not. But I would just work a little less. Maybe.”

Martin will also be the subject of a 2-part untitled documentary produced by A24 for Apple TV+, helmed by Morgan Neville, who was also behind the Oscar winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom. “It’s somebody else’s take,” Martin said, “They found a lot of archival stuff. They found a photo of my father in 1944 in Germany, touring Our Town with the USO.”

In the meantime, Only Murders in the Building is streaming only on Hulu and stars Steve Martin, Selena Gomez, and Martin Short.
