According to Variety, Steve Carrell is in talks to join Warner Brother’s Minecraft movie. Carrell was most recently in Woody Allen’s Cafe Society and just wrapped up production on Battle of the Sexes, produced by Fox Searchlight. Carrell plays Bobby Riggs and co-stars with Emma Stone, who plays Billie Jean King.
Rob McElhenney is already on board to direct. He’s known for writing the latest screenplay for Wonder Woman alongside Jason Fuchs. Warner Brothers got hold of Minecraft from the Swedish developer Mojang AM. Vertigo Entertainment will help produce and Jill Messick (Mean Girls) will also co-produce.
Minecraft, the video game, was launched in 2009. The game lets players create their own avatars and build their own worlds out of cube shaped pixels. Players can battle nocturnal monsters and in some modes, can play with multiple other players. Other modes include, survival mode, creative mode, and adventure mode.
The movie is set to launch May 25, 2019.
