Kelly Marie Tran of Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be joining the voice cast of the upcoming Dreamworks Animated films The Croods 2, according to Hollywood Reporter. The first Croods, released in 2013, was a modest success making over $500 million dollar worldwide and even received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Picture. A sequel seemed very likely at first, but due to DreamWorks financial struggles and shift in productions within the past few years, the film was kept in development hell. However, now it seems closer than initially expected with a December 2020 release date.
The Croods 2 will have the original cast returning, including Nicholas Cage, Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds. The plot will see the Croods encounter another family known as the Bettermans, with Tran playing the Betterman daughter Dawn, a young teen who becomes good friends with Eep while dealing with overtly strict parents. Dawn’s parent will be voiced by both Peter Dinklage and Leslie Mann respectively. However, The Croods original directors Chris Sanders and Kirk will not be returning due to other projects, with Joel Crawford taking their place.
Kelly Marie Tran’s contribution to the cast of Croods 2 is very exciting for the young and upcoming actress. Joel Crawford express the excitement of her addition to the cast by stating, “From the moment Kelly stepped behind the mic, we knew we had found our Dawn Betterman. She brings the perfect mix of quirkiness and heart to the role and is a perfect addition to our incredible cast.”
The Croods 2 is set for release December 23rd 2020.
