Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy and Barbie star Ryan Gosling took the stage in Tokyo, Japan, today for Star Wars Celebration. They officially announced their upcoming Star Wars project, Star Wars: Starfighter.
The newest installment is set five years after 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, and is set to go into production this fall, with a premiere date of May 28, 2027, exclusively in theaters. “There are many rumors, some true, some not. … This is not a prequel, this is not a sequel. It’s a new adventure,” said Levy. Gosling praised the film as “such a great story with great and original characters,” as well as “so much heart and adventure,” adding: “There is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”

Details of the project, written by Jonathan Tropper, have been kept under wraps for the past two years. We now know it is a standalone movie outside the Luke Skywalker core canon. However, Disney’s Lucasfilm still has plans for multiple Star Wars features in development with James Mangold, Simon Kinberg. Additionally, a Rey post-Episode IX movie with Daisy Ridley returning to the character and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directing is in development.
Levy’s last project with Disney, Deadpool & Wolverine, gave the company the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, making $1.33 billion worldwide. Star Wars: Starfighter will hit the screen after The Mandalorian & Grogu film premieres next year.
