During this year’s Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm has announced that Star Wars: Return of the Jedi will return to theatres to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Starting April 28th, the film will be released to select theatres in the US, UK, and other regions for a limited time.
Lucasfilm is eager to give younger fans who have not seen the film a chance “to enjoy a full theatrical presentation of the iconic film for the very first time.” They have even hired poster artist Matt Ferguson to create a new poster similar to the one he helped make for Empire Strikes Back’s 40th anniversary in 2020.
Ferguson expresses his excitement in creating another poster, not only for another chance to work in the Star Wars franchise but also for the “freedom to continue what [he] started with Empire” While Empire’s poster had a colder feel to it, Ferguson changes the coloring in this round by adding in more green alongside some red accents. “Return of the Jedi is very much the triumph of Luke and the Rebels, so I wanted to have more of the warmer colors coming back into the art,” Ferguson explains. He also heavily focuses on Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker to show off the film’s core conflict. Ferguson intends to tell a story through his artwork, so he uses this contrast to highlight the struggle between good and evil.
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi will soar across theaters from April 28th to May 4th.
