An as-of-yet-untitled movie about the sixteenth-century British poet, playwright, and translator Christopher Marlowe is currently in development by Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz and British director Greg Hall. The duo announced the production on May thirtieth, the 425th anniversary of Marlowe’s death, according to Variety.
Christopher Marlowe died in May of 1593 at the age of twenty-nine. He wrote the play Doctor Faustus, among other iconic works, and is often remembered as a primary influence and main competitor of William Shakespeare.
The Christopher Marlowe film, with a script written by historical novelist Francis Hamit, will explore Marlowe’s early life as a spy for the English crown, and interprets his death as an assassination for his involvement in espionage. It will also explore Marlowe’s sexuality, his atheism, and his writing life.
Casting is currently in process for the film. We will reveal more information as casting and release dates are announced.
