It’s been five years since the last Star Trek film released back in 2016, but it looks like the franchise’s absence from the big screen isn’t going to last too long. Kalinda Vazquez, writer of the ongoing series Star Trek: Discovery, is set to write new Star Trek film for Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot under “blind deal for an original movie that she hatched” according to Deadline.
It’s unclear if the film will take place in the same timeline as the recent feature-length entries that starred Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. The film also will likely be separate from the other Star Trek films that were in development, like the R-rated film that Quentin Tarantino was set to direct and the new take on the franchise from Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley.
Vazquez’s new film could potentially be a spin-off on Star Trek: Discovery. That show, Star Trek Picard and Star Trek: The Lower Decks have been the latest focus of the franchise, and they’re all currently streaming on Paramount’s newly rebranded streaming service, Paramount +.
Before Discovery Vazquez worked on series like Fear the Walking Dead, Once Upon a Time, Runaways, Nikita and Prison Break. She was also named after a character from Star Trek: The Original Series who appeared in the episode ‘By Any Other Name.’
