Stan Lee was a titan of the comic book realm. Having a hand in creating dozens of household Marvel Comics characters such as Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, The Avengers, and more. It’s no wonder that he was, and remains to be, one of the most inspiring creators ever to live. He lived a full life and hardly stopped to slow down until his passing in November 2018 at age 95. It has now been revealed that Jon Bolerjack, Lee’s assistant as he stated in the trailer, followed Lee around for years leading up to his death, documenting every comic book convention, film premiere, and private moment at the icon’s Hollywood Hills home. Bolerjack had been using the footage to create the documentary Stan Lee: The Final Chapter, he announced via the film’s trailer and accompanying Kickstarter campaign. Much to a tragedy, however, Bolerjack had also been capturing tumultuous behaviors inflicted upon Lee during the last four years of his life.
In 2018, The Hollywood Reporter detailed an investigation surrounding alleged elder abuse against Stan Lee, as well as a struggle for control of his estate. Bolerjack also reveals that by the time of his death, Lee had been facing severe financial struggles as well. Bolerjack, an avid comic book fan and film school graduate, paired with Lee a decade ago through mutual friends. Bolerjack soon captured details such as alleged hours of convention appearances, which have taken a toll on Lee’s wellbeing.
Bolerjack mentions in The Final Chapter‘s trailer, speaking directly to the audience,”Stan spent his final years enduring mistreatment, manipulation, and betrayal at the hands of a few very bad actors. At the time, I didn’t have the power to stop it, but I did have a camera and I filmed everything. Now I’m asking for your help to finish the film and finally get justice for Stan.”
