The news that Kevin Feige will reportedly not be producing any more Spider-Man films has many fans in disarray as fears Spider-Man may be pulled out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe run rampant. Deadline reports that Disney and Sony Pictures have reached an impasse after Disney has been trying to get a higher percentage of first dollar gross.
Apparently Disney wanted to move forward by splitting the profits 50-50 and Sony refused. The current agreement that Sony and Disney have been under is that Marvel gets 5% of profits and, understandably, Disney wants more after Spider-Man: Far From Home made a whopping $1.109 billion at the worldwide box office – more than any other Sony film to date. Surely Disney should earn a little bit of credit, especially since Kevin Feige’s producing influence has gotten Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame to be the highest-grossing film of all time. All of his films with Marvel the last decade have reached an astounding $26.8 billion.

Not reaching a deal where Marvel is involved would create a massive mess for Sony to deal with. Of course Tom Holland would still be in the two next Spider-Man films that are reportedly being made, but the ending to the most recent film would mean next to nothing. The whole world knows about Spider-Man’s existence now and characters such as Nick Fury and Harold “Happy” Hogan wouldn’t be able to help him. Zendaya as MJ may have to be recast, as well as Jacob Batalon as Ned. Not to mention the fact that the film set up Spider-Man as Tony Stark’s heir and with the MCU being out of the film, Peter wouldn’t even be able to mention his old mentor/father figure.
Sony apparently thinks that they will be fine since they still have Homecoming and Far From Home director Jon Watts and Feige’s Spider-Man co-producer Amy Paschal. It seems if Disney doesn’t lower its asking price, Sony is reluctant to keep Spider-Man in the MCU. Only time will tell if a deal ever gets reached.
So far, Marvel/Disney, Feige, and Sony have made no comments to the fate of our favorite webslinger.
