Spider-Man: Homecoming is projected to overtake the first Guardians of the Galaxy this week on the gross domestic box office, making it the 13th highest grossing superhero film of all time in the United States. As of Sunday, the new Spidey film is just $51,000 shy of the goal, a landmark that the film is expected to soon pass once numbers come in for the past few days.
The current domestic take for the movie rests comfortably above $333.1 million. This will make Spider-Man: Homecoming the third film this year to crack the top 13 films of all time. Also currently on the list are Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 at the 9th spot with $389.8 million and Wonder Woman at the 5th spot with $412.4 million. The original Avengers film still holds the top spot at $623.4 million.
Audiences still have Thor:Ragnarok to look forward to as well this year. That film is already garnering glowing early reviews for the third installment in the series that has been helmed by quirky comedy indie director Taika Waititi. It will be intriguing to see how a riskier project like that will do in comparison to the return of Marvel’s tried and true teen superhero Spider-Man.
Regardless of the ultimate result here, it is clear that 2017 has been a phenomenal year for superhero flicks at the box office, and only promises to keep raising the stakes.
