Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton is set to work again with Sony Pictures for the next little while. After the recent success of Brand New Day, which became the highest-grossing film domestically and the third highest-grossing film worldwide, Cretton has signed a three-year overall deal with Sony Pictures.
As part of the deal, Destin Daniel Cretton will develop films through his production company, Hisako Films, alongside the company’s president, Jeyun Munford, for release by Sony Pictures. The deal doesn’t include any directing efforts by Cretton, meaning the director would still be free to helm the director’s chair for any studio. That includes his upcoming live-action adaptation of the anime Naruto, which Cretton already has lined up with Lionsgate, and is set to begin filming sometime early next year.
As part of the announcement of this deal, Sanford Panitch, Sony Pictures’ motion picture group president, made the following statement:
Destin is a very special human, a deeply thoughtful visionary mind, a brilliant filmmaker in its truest sense and a marvelous storyteller who is a master at understanding the cinematic experience. We at Sony are proud to be making a future together and expanding our relationship with Destin, Jeyun and Hisako Films.
Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures’ motion picture group CEO and chairman, added to that statement with a brief one of his own, which says:
Destin is the real deal, and we are lucky as hell to be in ongoing business with him and his team. Po’okela.
