Loony Tunes fans rejoice! Warner Brothers is eyeing the iconic mouse Speedy Gonzales as their next animated film. Gonzales was famous in the 1960’s as being the fastest rodent who could out run any cat in Mexico, with that famous catch phrase Arriba! Arriba! Andale! Andale! . Native Mexican filmmaker and actor Eugenio Derbez (Instructions Not Included) is being pegged to voice Speedy.
Going under the working title Speedy, Hank Nelken (Saving Silverman) has been brought aboard to pen the script. When asked about the role, Derbez said,
In Mexico we grew up watching Speedy Gonzales. He was like a superhero to us, or maybe more like a revolutionario like Simon Bolivar or Pacho Villa. He watched out for the little people but with a lot of bravado and a weakness for the ladies. I’m really excited to be bringing this character to the big screen. And besides being Mexican— my full name is Eugenio Derbez Gonzalez and I have big ears. The casting couldn’t be better.
The late great Mel Blanc was the original voice of the fast talking and fast moving mouse, who started off in a Looney Tunes short in 1955. Derbez has a chance at reviving the character and sharing it with a brand new generation. We shall see if Warner Bros. takes the next step and moves forward with fulling producing the picture.
