Sony Unveils Trailer For Upcoming ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’

After their last outing in 2021, the Ghostbusters have once again arrived to fight against the supernatural. Sony just unveiled a new trailer for the project, officially dubbed Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

Frozen Empire picks up where the last film, Afterlife, left off. New York is experiencing one of the hottest, record-breaking summers, but temperatures suddenly change from scorching to freezing after an ancient artifact releases an evil force. Egon Spengler’s daughter Callie and grandkids Phoebe and Trevor must work with original Ghostbusters Venkman, Stanz, and Zeddemore to pull New York from its deep freeze.

As Deadline points out, the series’ trajectory took an intriguing turn before Afterlife hit the scene. The 2016 reboot of the story, starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, proved to be a massive flop, both critically and financially. After the reception, production company Sony took the story right back to where it proved to work, connecting 2021’s Afterlife directly to the 1984 classic. Despite a slow time for movies due to the pandemic, Afterlife landed with critics and audiences, pulling in $204 million across its November run.

After the release of Afterlife, the franchise was pulled to a total gross of $945.2 million, with Frozen Empire no doubt being able to push the franchise into a billion.

Returning from the previous film are Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, and Paul Rudd. This time, they’re joined by newcomers Patton Oswalt and Kumail Nanjiani.

On top of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson reprising their roles from the original 84 classic, supporting actress Annie Potts is also set to appear as receptionist Janine Melnitz.

This time around, Gil Kenan, co-writer on Afterlife, is taking over from Jason Reitman for directing. Reitman is still attached to the project, working with Kenan again as a writer.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire hits theaters on March 29th, 2024. Check out the trailer below.
