Kraven the Hunter is set to release in theaters this week, but Kraven’s introduction marks an end to their attempt at a Spider-Man universe. After Morbius, Madame Web, the Venom movies, and the Amazing Spider-Man sequels, Sony is taking a break from trying to create their own Superhero world. According to a report cited by Comicbook, Sony is now working with Marvel Studios on Spider-Man 4.
Sony made it clear that “It’s really about the next ‘Spider-Man’ film.”
Kraven the Hunter finished production under the orginal estimated budget of $130M at a total of $110 million, around the same for most of the other movies in the Sony Spider-Man universe. However, film analysts such as The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez, says that this film could be the biggest loss for Sony.
Sony released three Spider-Man spinoffs this year: Madame Web, Venom: The Last Dance, and now Kraven the Hunter. Some have noted that Sony’s movies are simply not good. They “lack quality” creating a “movie no one asked for.”
However, Sony is still finding success in the Spider-verse. The animated movies became an instant critically acclaimed success that brought in hundreds of millions at the box office. Although a problem was reported while working on the third installment, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, Sony is reportedly working through it.
Kraven the Hunter is releasing in cinemas on December 13th.
