Sony Pictures has acquired Golf Trip, an R-rated buddy comedy pitch developed by Ryan Kalil and Blake Griffin’s production banner, Mortal Media. Screenwriter Max Searle has been tapped to pen the script. The story follows three lifelong friends who represent the final holdouts of their once-extensive golf group still making time for their annual getaway. Determined to keep the tradition alive, one friend convinces the other two to travel to one of Scotland’s oldest and most elite private golf clubs. Upon arrival, the trio finds themselves thrust into an eccentric, surreal subculture of extreme wealth and aristocratic excess that quickly tests the limits of their friendship.
Searle currently serves as co-creator and showrunner on Amazon’s upcoming Barbershop television reboot series. His television credits include co-creating Netflix’s Neon, serving as co-showrunner on season two of Roku’s Chad, and working as a co-executive producer on Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, which garnered him Emmy and PGA Award nominations. He also earned a WGA Award nomination for FX’s Dave and is developing an untitled Marshawn Lynch private investigator comedy series for Amazon. Founded by former NFL All-Pro center Kalil and former NBA All-Star Griffin, Mortal Media previously produced Apple TV+’s retro-futuristic dramedy Hello Tomorrow! and 20th Century Studios’ White Men Can’t Jump reboot for Hulu. The company’s active development slate also features the animated series Swap Meet at Hulu and the action-thriller Carrier for New Regency.
Sony has not yet announced a director, casting attachments, or a targeted production window for Golf Trip.
