Pop Mart’s sensational toy Labubu may soon be headed to the big screen. Sony Pictures has acquired the screen rights to the viral Chinese collectible, which gained global fame in 2024 with recognition from celebrity fans like Blackpink’s Lisa, singer Rihanna, and soccer icon Sir David Beckham.
Often described as cute, ugly and “just plain weird,” the Labubu doll, part elf, part monster, has inspired a worldwide craze. Fans stand in massive lines to purchase the creations of Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung. The dolls with pointy ears, big eyes, and a mischievous grin, generated $670 million in the first half of 2025 alone.
The deal arrives in the post-Barbie (2023) era. Mattel Films, the studio behind the highest-grossing film of 2023, currently has 19 movies in development, including projects based on the beloved purple dinosaur Barnie, the card game Uno, and the Magic 8 Ball toy.
If the Labubu film moves forward, it would mark another project for Sony Pictures Animation, the studio behind the KPop Demon Hunters (2025), Netflix’s most-watched original title. At this point, there is no creative team attached and it remains unclear whether the adaptation will be animated or live action.
In the meantime, Sony Pictures Animation will be releasing the Steph Curry-produced Goat theatrically on February 13, 2026. The film follows a small goat with big dreams to play pro ball.
