Animation director Matthew A. Cherry will be working with Sony Pictures Animation on a feature length animated movie. According to Variety this upcoming animation project is currently titled Tut.
Currently the project is in the very early stages of development, but we do know that Tut, as the title suggests, will be about the young Pharaoh Tutankhamun. The movie will be set in ancient Egypt, presumably during the era that Tutankhamun lived in, but the film will also deal with themes like coming of age and afro-futurism. The real King Tutankhamun is often referred to as the boy king. He ruled the Egyptian empire from 1334 to 1325 BCE, until he died at the young of either 18 or 19 years old. It seems like a historically movie about King Tut would be very tragic, so unless the movie is going to take great historical liberties Tut could be very adult oriented.
Collider reports that both Matthew A. Cherry and Monica A. Young came up with the ideas behind Tut. Cherry is probably best know for writing and co-directing the animated short film Hair Love. The short film was very popular and critically successful. Hair Love also won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film.
It sounds like Tut will be an interesting movie, and one that movie audiences and animation fans can look forward to.
