Earlier this month, Spider-Man and Tom Holland fans got some big news. Sony Producer, Amy Pascal revealed that three more Spider-Man movies are in the works. Even better news, she also states that all three movies hope to include Tom Holland and the MCU, because what would the MCU be without Spider-Man?
Since the news broke, there has been a ton of speculation and retaliation, (even by Holland himself) about the news surrounding his return, but after the Spider-Man: No Way Home Premiere on December 14, Sony’s CEO Tom Rothman spoke about Holland’s Spidey future at Sony after stating he is eagerly anticipating this film and that Spider-Man and Tom Holland will return to the big-screen sooner than we thought.
Comicbook.com’s Brandon Davis clarified the news, stating that Marvel and Sony have a sort of “lendback” situation, in which if Sony lends a character to Marvel, they have to give one back. With that being said, Rothman could not stress enough the terrific environment surrounding Sony and Marvel’s work relationship. While there are no specific plans for the movies following the news, the relationship between the two companies allows for characters to be lent between the two and is how Benedict Cumberbatch was able to star in Spider-Man: No Way Home as Doctor Strange. While Sony only has “one more lendback that is committed,” Rothman also states that the companies have a mutual hope to continue their working relationship and ride that wave as long as possible.
Sony CEO Tom Rothman’s comment about Spider-Man’s future line up with reports of another Spider-Man trilogy and, even through nothing has been made official, he hopes that with the continued collaboration between Marvel and Sony, Tom Holland will get a chance to be involved. Without anything confirmed, Rothman states that fans will get at least one more chance to see Holland sling his webs in the upcoming MCU film, many fans hoping that film is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Spider-Man: No Way Home follows the story of Spider-Man’s identity being revealed, and now that he is unmasked, Peter Parker serves no chance at living a normal life. Peter then asks for help from Doctor Strange, setting the stakes too high for even a superhero to combat and forcing him to discover what being Spider-Man truly means.
Directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Marisa Tomei, Jamie Foxx, Alfred Molina, and Benedict Cumberbatch, Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to release in theaters on December 17th, 2021.
