Sony is bringing the church to Hollywood as the studio announced their biopic centered on multi-platinum gospel crooner Kirk Franklin. According Deadline, the film is currently untitled and is being handled by former Sony executive DeVon Franklin under his Franklin Entertainment banner. Kirk Franklin himself will serve as an executive producer through his label Fo Yo Soul Entertainment.
Brian Ivie of The Drop Box fame has been hired to write the script which journey through the lifetime of the 14-time Grammy-winner from his humble origins to his astounding rise as the godfather of gospel music.
Franklin’s career took off in 1993 under the moniker of Kirk Franklin & The Family. His eponymous debut went platinum and sold over 1 million copies becoming the first gospel album to achieve this feat. Following the release of Long Live Love, Franklin became the first artist in history to reach the top of the Billboard gospel charts in one sitting.
DeVon Franklin is a highly-recognized preacher and New York Times best selling author. Franklin Entertainment recently released inspirational film Breakthrough starring Chrissy Metz and an animated film The Star and Miracles From Heaven.
Ivie’s most recent effort Emmanuel was directed and written by him and centers around the 2015 Charleston church mass shooting.
